Beyond Fistula helps obstetric fistula survivors heal and rebuild their lives after surgery through vocational training, business loans, emotional support and educational scholarships.
Background: Over one million women suffer from a severe childbirth injury known as obstetric fistula. This painful condition is caused by prolonged, obstructed labor, so disproportionately affects women living in poor countries without access to medical care. One surgery can fix most cases, but even after being cured fistula survivors suffer the repercussions of their fistula: social exile, lack of marketable skills, and often lack of education. Beyond Fistula helps fistula survivors reintegrate and reconnect with their families, and empowers women with tools that can lead them to economic independence.
