Minimal reception but the team has climbed 2 days already and still going strong! Also 10 miles done on day 2 alone and on day 1 they reached Simba camp.

This past week over 75 women came to beyond fistul

This past week over 75 women came to beyond fistula for a business and baking 4 day workshop with @lajawabtreats. They learned everything from how to turn a plan into a business to budgeting and loans and were interviewed to learn what supplies are needed to begin!! The program concluded with a graduation and diploma ceremony to show how proud and celebrate their accomplishments. This is often the only diplomas the women have received and they proudly get to leave with new found skills and support in their futures.

We’ve begun gifting women who have graduated fro

We’ve begun gifting women who have graduated from our farm skills or business training programs with the tools and supplies they need to launch their own ventures. This month, 8 incredible women each received 75 chicks to kickstart their poultry businesses and begin generating income for themselves and their families!

Music is healing. Song is a big part of Kenyan culture. You will see that for any occasion there is a song and dance with it.

This was a visit to one of the peer support groups in kericho. They presented us with gifts song and dance after their meeting. They meet monthly and are saving to buy a goat per person (26 people). They started in 2021 and are a strong group.

This is what community looks like!

Here we have 26 women in one of our amazing support groups.

Peer Support Groups bring together fistula survivors from the same regions to build community, foster emotional healing, share knowledge, and launch collective businesses. Each group selects a fistula survivor to be their leader/coordinator. We currently operate 3 Peer Support Groups that meet monthly and engage in group business ventures - two have pooled sufficient funds and are in the process of purchasing one sheep per woman, with long term plans to also purchase a cow for each woman.

Sewing is a part of the vocational courses we offer. After graduating from the sewing academy many of the graduates go on to full-time positions in their fields, or venture into business ownership by participating in our business training.

Deb and Val are joining 20 women (most all with permanent stomas) to climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise funds and awareness to support our women in Kenya with colostomies. The climb is a 7 day climb to a peak of 19,341 feet.

VOLUNTEER reflection - Victoria!! 🤍🤍

“I am currently a pediatric resident, and I am passionate about addressing social determinants of health—that is, the systemic and structural factors that affect people’s health. When I learned about Beyond Fistula, I was immediately inspired by the stories of the amazing women and girls in the program, and I was so excited to have the opportunity to come work with this organization.

All of the people that I met at Beyond Fistula and Gynocare Hospital taught me so much, from the social workers to the physicians and other health care providers. Most of all, I will never forget the friendships I made with the women and girls in the Beyond Fistula program, nor will I ever stop being inspired by them.

The women and girls at Beyond Fistula have faced unimaginable hardships, and yet they are so optimistic, bright, and determined. They were ceaselessly eager and kind in welcoming me into the house, teaching me to speak Swahili and cook Kenyan food. They were open and vulnerable in letting me interview them, because they hoped their stories might inspire others. They shared their dreams of becoming businesswomen, farmers, teachers, nurses, and more. In watching their hard work and determination, I could not help but believe that they will achieve anything they want. Most of all, I was humbled and inspired that many of them spoke so selflessly of how they wanted to help their communities, inspire those who are still suffering from fistulas, and empower other women.

I will take their stories with me, so that as a pediatrician I can treat every child I care for with even greater empathy and kindness. I will forever be inspired by their strength and selflessness, and I am even more determined to spend my career working to address social determinants of health, to break down the structural and systemic barriers that prevent people from having good health, and to ensure that as many people as possible across the world have the opportunities they need to succeed.”
